Sisters in Matching Dresses

Sisters

I think I forgot about posting these pictures. When I got home these pictures were waiting printed in 5×7 size to go in a frame that holds the three of them. The frame doesn’t look quite like the picture, but I did it up anyway.

These girls in matching dresses that their mother made are my little girls Kate and Lily. It is hard to get them to sit or stand for a portrait. I had used a small light box, and you can see it miss Lily and just hit the side of her face because she kept moving. Note to self: with kids use very large softbox or umbrella.

First Lake Winnipeg Beach Pictures

I had the girls up at my parents cottage in Lester Beach, just north of Winnipeg in Manitoba. When I was growing up, we used to spend the entire summer up at the cottage. This year I was lucky enough to be able to spend two weeks with my parents, sisters and my girls there.

That’s Lily in front of the cabin. Notice the lack of grass. Nice to be somewhere that doesn’t need mowing. Here are a couple of other pictures of the girls from the beach. There were hundreds more taken, I just wanted to get a couple up.

Whitney Dancing

I headed out with Kristen to take some senior photos. We were shooting on Nicollet Island. We were in pretty bright sun, but with the help of a SB900, a umbrella and a reflector, we got some pretty good shots. After that we wanted to get some pictures of Whitney dancing. Somehow before this shoot I had no idea what an incredible dancer Whitney was. We got some great pictures. Here is a poster of three of my favorite poses (moves?).

Jen and Cody’s Wedding

I had the great pleasure to be the photographer at Jen and Cody’s wedding last weekend. They had their wedding at a pretty great outdoor location, the Riedel Mansion in Fridley. There was a gazebo outside where the ceremony was held, and the Mansion could have been used if the weather was poor, but fortunately it was wonderful, and everything took place outdoors.

Here are just a few of the pictures from the event. There will be more later, and families will have a gallery in the Clients section next week where they can see many more.

Thanks again Jen and Cody for letting me share your day, and thanks Barb for thinking of me. It was a lot of fun. More pictures soon!

New Studio Shots

My friends Rich and Mary of Twin Shot Photography have now got themselves some studio space. I went to see the space, and it is pretty cool. Not huge, but looks like it will be a great space for them.

While there we played around with some lighting and stuff. Here is a shot of my friend Kristen.

After this closeup, I decided to work on a concept of three. I had just seen this idea that another photographer that has space in the same building had done. Not really new, but the three pictures in graphic frames on one image was something that I hadn’t done yet, but thought it would be good for senior pictures.

Follow through to flickr for a bigger shot.

You have a nice space Rich and Mary! Hope to steal a few frames in there every once in a while 🙂

What does Unemployed Mean?

No time for TVI used to think that you went to school, then got a job, and you were good. Unemployed meant bored and panicked all the the same time. The last thing you would want. I was probably 10. I have gone to school formally a couple of times, but probably have learned more out of school since, than in all the time I spent at University (both of them). I have had many jobs. From fast food chef, to restaurant buss boy, to retail sales, to bike mechanic, to snowboard store, to tree planter, to construction, to cabinet maker, to janitor, to mainframe programmer, to web programmer, to java GUI programmer, to educator, to photographer. But through all of those jobs, I have never had much time off. Sometimes doing more than one at a time. I would always try to find a job before moving to the next one. If I was ever without a job, I was usually slightly panicked.

This feeling is finally fading. One of the reasons I can “take time off” is that I haven’t spent as much as I made in the last three years I was at my last contract. This gave me the flexibility to finally not feel paniced when the contract ended. So I got to thinking, there are a lot of people for which the definition of the traditional job we think about doesn’t apply. Just about anyone with a small business. They often don’t have a steady or regular paycheck every month or two weeks. Neither do photographers. This is where I am trying to get to, to be able to do photography full time, but not for someone else.

So this brings me back to this summer, where I am unemployed. I am certainly not sitting around. To start with, we have pulled Lily from daycare, and with the exception of a couple of day camps Kate is in, she will be around too, until Kindergarten starts. So Daddy Day Care it is. This will take up a huge chunk of my time. They are at an age where they don’t yet run out the door to play with friends the whole day. On one hand this is good, because I will get to play with them all summer. One the other hand, I have a long list of things I want to do.

First off, I have been blogging about building my NAS as I get it running again. This is my photo backup, and needs to get finished. I also need to finish the redo of my site at christopherwardphotography.com. After watching the Zack Arias critiques, it is obvious (as if it wasn’t before) that I need to make that site reflect the direction I am trying to take my photography. I have the design done, and need the pictures and content now. Once that is up, I need to start marketing. I have some ideas, and will talk about those another time.

Also, my education in photography is far from done. It is just starting. There is so much to learn. So I am signing up for Kelby Training for the next couple of months. Not just for photoshop classes, but I am really looking forward to the stuff that Joe McNally and David Ziser have up there. I am sure that I could spend several hours a day doing this stuff. Never mind the books that I have that I could finish or reread.

Oh yea, I need to get out and shoot. This is photography right? Tonight I am meeting friends at a studio to practice some lighting setups, and tomorrow I have a shoot with a young mother and her newborn. I also have an upcoming charity shoot for a Lions banquet coming up.

Does all this sound like work? Yup, kind of does. Just that I am not getting paid much if anything. But its all ground work, and all necessary. In fact, there could be a lot of people that will be working far less than I will this summer, but will still be getting paid by their employer. Such is life. I am just glad that I get the opportunity this summer to do the things I want to do: hang with my kids, and take pictures.

Note: the image is not to suggest that most people unemployed sit and watch tv. If you are unemployed not by choice, how about looking at it as an oportunity to do something you haven’t been able to do, or learn something new.

Gasworks on a Sunny Day

I was pretty disappointed that when I went to the Gasworks Park in Seattle that it was pretty cloudy. I was hoping for a shot across the water of the city. A couple of days later when I saw a break in the clouds, I hopped up and booked it over by bus. It was in the afternoon, so it wasn’t the best light, but I had Kerry Park that I was going to that evening. (I blogged about the other day.)

Tamron 17-50 vs Nikon 17-55

Tamron 17-55 f/2.8I own the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. If you follow this blog, you will know that I had to send it in for service a little while back. I had issues with focusing, and some parts coming loose. While I had the lens in for service, I had to rent the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 when I had a wedding to shoot. This is a bit of a comparison after using both. Not scientific at all.

First of all, I bought the Tamron because it was $450. The Nikon is $1230. A bit of a difference. I now know what that money gets you. The Nikon is a lot heavier. That could be a plus or a minus depending on what you like. The weight is because the lens has more metal in it. The lens I rented was very much a rental. It was banged up pretty good, but still worked. With the Tamron I am always very careful, and one of the issues I had was that the front ring where the hood snaps on was loose. You could wiggle it.

Sharpness is good across both lenses. The Tamron appears to be fine now that I have it back. I was never really happy with, and it seemed to get worse until I sent it in. Now I have no issues. I have not tried to examine sharpness across all apertures, and I don’t have comparison pictures, but I am happy with it now. I shoot a lot with this lens at 2.8, and it seems just fine. (My Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 feels sharper, but I haven’t  tried to collect proof.)

nikon17-55dxFocus speed is a world of difference. Night and day. You can’t hear the Nikon, and can’t tell when it is focusing (except for the odd time that it hunts, but so do all lenses). The Nikon seems instantanious. The Tamron is slow. I don’t really care about the noise. It doesn’t bug me. But it means that I can tell how long it takes for the lens to focus. It almost always turns to get close and then a few smaller micro adjustments. I have very bad luck with moving kids. That can be an issue with any lens, but I fell it is an issue with the Tamron.

So, it really depends how you want to use this lens. If you want a fast zoom lens (aperture) to use on a small light weight body, and price is a concern (when is it not), then this is a good option. If you want to shoot sports and moving kids, I am a little unsure on giving it the thumbs up. I do shoot my own kids with this lens, but not with great results. I try to shoot with my 70-200 if I am after moving things, but that is a much longer focal length, and a much heavier lens.

For me, I am considering replacing this with the Nikon version. This issue really holding me back right now is the full frame one. If I am going to move to a full frame camera, and I want to eventually, then the 17-55 will not work on those cameras. I will keep my D90 as a backup, so maybe it is a good lens to keep with the camera. In the meantime, I will have a better lens. Doing it over, I would probably try to save for the Nikon. Paying double (or more) seems like a Nikon Tax, but there really are good reasons that it should be priced more. It’s just whether you think the durability, the weight, and the focus speed are deal breaker issues for you.
