Too skinny

No, I am not talking about me post marathon. This blog theme is too skinny. I am getting tired of my pictures getting cut off on the right edge. I usually post the medium size from flickr, and it is just too big for the blog. I don’t really think the pictures are too big. I think I need to change the theme. To do that though, I need to also update the pictures that form the top banner of the site. They are all a fixed width, and will need to be updated. That will take more work than just pushing out the width of the main div.

Hello Captcha

I hate making people type in a captcha every time they want to enter a comment, but I am tired of the flood of comment spam I now get. I was using the Akismet plugin, and it does a good job, but I am now getting 50+ a day in my queue. I still feel like I should look in the queue to see if there is anything real in there, and it is just too much work. So… MyCaptcha it is.

New WordPress to come

WordPress has released the 2.6 version a little while ago. Everything appears to be working fine here, so I haven’t felt the need to jump on the new release. I always worry a bit about a new version, but Ars Technica is saying that the new version is being downloaded at record numbers, with very few problems. I guess I should upgrade. I have made some changes, but I believe I was smart enough to only modify a theme.

1008 Photostream views

I had been hoping to jump into flickr right at the same time that I had 1000 photostream views and get a screen shot, but I missed it. It jumped up to 1008 today. I checked photostats, and as of this post, I have 4,701 views on individual photos. Closing in on 5,000. Does it matter? Not really, but it is nice to see that people want to look at my photos. One cool thing is that 20 of my photos have been selected by people as favorites. Cool.

My Provider is not #1

I use 1 and 1 as my web provider. Can’t say that I am completely happy with them. The site can be slow at times, and yesterday and today there have been periods where it was down completely. I do like that I have a full working shell, and can SSH and SCP files to and from that box easily, but the shell can be ridiculously slow. I tried to look for a replacement. I signed up for dreamhost for a bit. When I started with them, it seemed good. The shell seemed much better… but gallery sucked. Gallery is what I use with the family photo site. After looking around the internet, I discovered that many people did not like running gallery on dreamhost for performance reasons. I heard it was the use of remote NFS shares for drive space, but don’t know for sure if 1 and 1 did anything different. Sigh.

Welcome friends and family

I probably should have posted this earlier, but I just wanted to welcome anyone that was coming to this blog for the first time today. I sent an email (spamed ya) out to friends and family to let them know that I was officially up and running again. Nice to have you here.

I had spam.

So far, there has been nothing but spam in the comments field. Not that I am expecting hundreds of people to all of a sudden start reading my blog, but I am surprised how fast the spammers picked it up. Especially since I had comments turned off on my last site for over a year. I see one to three a day right now. Actually, I thought WordPress had some type of captcha thing going. Have to check if that is turned on or not.
