There were a lot of really good pictures taken by the students at the DLWS workshop in Traverse City Michigan. When I was watching the participant slide show I saw several strong pictures that I figured must be contenders for the top photograph. Instead, it caught me by surprise, that it was mine!

I posted this image earlier, before I knew that it was chosen. I have reworked it a bit. Adding some things that Moose Peterson showed us, I added some contrast to the buildings, lightened them, and added a gradient to the sky to bring out some more color.

I am planning to get this printed. Still trying to decide on a print to frame, or stand out.

We have shot a couple of barns in the last couple of days. I am starting to blur the shoots together. At two shoots a day, one in the morning, and one in the evening, it is hard to keep everything straight. We got to two places this morning even. Both had old buildings in them. The first is really a school.

The shot above was pretty typical of what most people got. I got another one, actually before that one where someone drive a car up and shone their head lights on the barn.

Once the light had come up I took some shots of the front of the building. This is one that I took that I over “whitened”, that I kind of liked.

Then we moved on to another location that had a barn with a lot of character. It was hard to get a clean shot of the entire thing, so I went for more of a detail shot.

That shot was interesting, because I came and stood right beside Joe McNally who was hand holding razor sharp images of this barn holding the 200-400 monster. I should have got a picture of that. Anyway, I figured I would shoot something similar, and I like what came out.

I had to figure out a way to get a plant in there somewhere….

This was the first shoot of DLWS Michigan. Fishtown in Leeland. We got up early enough to get there and watch the sun come up. Unfortunately the light didn’t do anything spectacular, but it wasn’t completely overcast either.

It was fun to get out shooting early in the morning. I don’t usually get the chance to do so. I am usually trying to get people out of bed and fed before the school bus comes. I even managed to get a shot in of my father who came along on the trip. This was one of the first shots of the day that I took.

We also got some shots of some of the guys that process the fish here. Joe McNally gave an impromptu lighting seminar also, but that will have to wait for another post.

We are shooting twice a day, but I won’t be able to post stuff all the shoots. Just not enough time to get through everything. This will give me some pictures to post for a few days (or more) after the trip is over.

I am not sure what other trip I could do this year. NC is full, and Maine is after when¬†my¬†NWA voucher expires. That leaves Michigan for this year,¬†that I could theoreticly drive to. Not my first pick for locations. I am sure that it would be great, but it doesn’t seem as exotic at Hawaii. Hmmmm…
